Fall 2006
Recently I ran across some old boat docks. They were made from CRS (cold rolled steel) needless to say they were in pretty rough shape. Here are some before and after pictures of them.
As you can see the docks have an abundance of corrosion from years and years of exposure to the elements.
We blasted the components and then used the UltrawearPlus® process on them.
This is what the parts looked like once the process was completed. Although the steel is still pitted it now has corrosion resistance.
These are the dock components painted and with stained red cedar on them. We have put the wood tread surface on the docks with stainless steel fasteners and would not expect to have anything but minimal paint touch up maintenance on the steel dock components for decades.

Cast Iron Outdoor Furniture
UltrawearPlus® can restore your old Cast and Wrought Iron furniture to BETTER!!!!! than new, the re-finishing process works like this. (also read "Background Story" below)
Before
As you can see (above) there is quite a bit of red rust coming through the layers of paint.
First the furniture is disassembled where possible, I found the fasteners rusted tightly together and actually had to cut them apart.
(I did replace them with stainless steel fasteners)
Next the old paint and rust is removed by automated steel shot blasting machines that will clean the piece down to the bare metal.
The next step is to put the furniture through the patented Heat Treating process UltrawearPlus® which imparts both wear and corrosion properties to the iron increasing the surface hardness of the iron to 62 Rockwell “C”.
After the furniture is cooled down in the Heat Treating furnace under Nitrogen atmosphere it is removed washed and dipped into a proprietary pigmented polymer in the color of your choice. (The gloss white was chosen by my In-laws)
The UltrawearPlus® finished furniture is now ready to withstand our wide ranging temperatures and sometimes brutal Michigan weather. We guarantee our UltrawearPlus® finish will be maintenance free for at least ten years or we will refinish it for free.

Background Story
One day while visiting my wife's parents, I noticed an old cast iron bench on their front porch. It was covered with red rust and must have had 20 coats of paint on it, so much paint in fact, that the intricate design was barely discernable anymore (see above). I immediately thought why not try and "rejuvenate" this old piece by using the UltrawearPlus® process to yet another application, one that will undoubtedly save my In-Laws a lot of work in the future and score a few son-in-law points as a benefit to me.
I have a metallurgical engineering degree and have been in the Heat Treating industry for over 30 years. I hold two U.S. patents and Trademarks in the field of Ferritic-nitrocarburizing also known as FNC. UltrawearPlus® is the trademark for our FNC technology a low temperature heat treating process that diffuses nitrogen into the casting, creating a barrier between the sub-straight, the cast or wrought iron and the weather. We have used UltrawearPlus® to solve corrosion problems in the automotive industry for 20 years on the most severe applications “under hood” and “under body”. So a light went off in my head why not strip the old paint off the cast iron bench and use the patented UltrawearPlus® process to give the bench the kind of wear and corrosion protection that we have been providing the Auto companies for years. After UltrawearPlus® processing the bench was then dipped into our patented “pigmented” polymer coating. Gloss white was chosen in this instance. Colors come in the following:
White, Black (gloss or matte), Hunter Green, Clear (gloss or matte)
Cost is factored by how much "sweat equity" you want to invest, if the piece or pieces are disassembled, painted and re-assembled by you, the cost will be less. If you would like us to disassemble, paint and reassemble with the stainless steel fasteners the process will run more. Your choice.
If you are interested in saving hours of work and the cost of repainting your furniture annually, for years to come contact me for a quote. We will bring color samples for you to choose from.
